DIY Breast Care GuideDr Vivienne Behrens graduated from the University of Pretoria in 1986. After internship, she spent 2 years as a Medical Officer at Addington Hospital in Durban. She joined Intercare Blaauwberg in 2004 as a valuable team member and manages the Travel Clinic at the branch. She competes in a range of sporting activities, including The Alzheimer’s Awareness Challenge which aims to encourage older people to get active to slow down or prevent the onset of this debilitating disease. Dr Behrens has a passion for high mountains and has climbed Kilimanjaro. She also enjoys visiting game parks.

After her internship and community service and working in the UK she came home to work at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital (first as SHO then registrar) for two and a half years. Dr. Du Preez then moved to trauma as a Casualty Officer at a Private Hospital for a year before doing a brief stint as a ship surgeon on the RMS St Helena. She started as one of the original doctors’ at Intercare Blaauwberg in 2004 and has been a valuable part of the team since then. She has always enjoyed sports, particularly running but has recently turned to Triathlon and has completed a few Ironman 70.3 events ( two of which international). She loves animals, reading and traveling.

She’s been working in the Pietermaritzburg area for the past 10 years. She is a well-experienced general practitioner and has extensive experience working in the ER department. Dr Gumede has a passion for healing the sick in a holistic and family-friendly manner and the prevention and treatment of diseases.

Prior to this she studied a Bachelor of Arts degree at Rhodes and was a professional ballet dancer for Cape Town City Ballet! Her impetus for holistic healing transpired during her Honours degree at UCT, where she graduated Cum Laude. Her innovative and curious spirit led her to develop groundbreaking work in the dance world by teaching ballet to disabled people. It was during this time she developed a fascination and love for medicine, in particular Integrative Medicine. She is a firm believer in the healing power of art and movement as a treatment modality for those suffering from chronic illnesses. A kind and caring soul, she is passionate about Paediatrics, having done her community service at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child hospital. Here she showed a particular affinity for the Empilweni Clinic, treating children living with HIV and working closely with phenomenal Specialists in the field. In her spare time, she enjoys being a triathlete, playing the piano, writing, yoga, travelling, snorkeling and even sky diving! He firmly believes in an interdisciplinary patient care model encompassing the interconnection between biology, psychology, and socio-economic factors.
