Out-of-the-box lunch box ideas for kids

This year, skip the same old sandwiches and try these super easy lunch box ideas. It is guaranteed to light up your kids’ faces when they see you’ve taken lunch to the next level.

Roll-Up Ham Rolls

  • 1 slice of ham (can be beef or chicken as well)
  • 2 Tablespoons of cream cheese

Spread the cream cheese evenly on the slice of ham and roll up. Add greenery if preferred.

Banana & Oatmeal Cookies

  • 1 Cup mashed ripe banana
  • 2 Cups oatmeal
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla essence
  • ¼ cup apple sauce
  • ¼ cup raisins

Heat the oven to 180˚C.
Mix all the ingredients until moist. Mixture will be sticky.
Drop by tablespoonful onto an ungreased baking sheet.
Flatten to desired thickness and shape. Cookies will not spread on baking.
Bake for 15 minutes.
Cool on a wire rack.

Peanut Butter & Jam Sushi Rolls

  • 2 Slices of bread
  • 2 Tablespoons of jam

Remove the crust from the bread. With a rolling pin, completely flatten the bread.
Spread 1 tablespoon of peanut butter and 1 tablespoon of jam on each slice of bread.
Roll each slice into a tight spiral and cut each spiral into 4 pieces.

Parmesan Puff Pastry Twists

  • 450g Puff pastry sheets – thawed
  • 1 Cup parmesan cheese, fresly grated
  • 1 Teaspoon dried basil
  • ¼ Teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ Cup butter – melted

Preheat the oven to 200˚C.
Unfold pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface.
Cut each sheet into 13 strips.
Mix the cheese, basil & garlic in a long shallow pan / dish.
Brush melted butter on pastry sticks.
Roll pastry in the cheese mixture to coat each side evenly.
Gently twist the pastry sticks and place of a lightly greased baking sheet.
Bake for 12 minutes.
Remove to wire racks to cool.
Serve with a dipping sauce.

Snack Crackers

  • 1 Slice of lunch meat
  • 1 Slice of cheese
  • 4 Salticrax or cracker of choice

Cut 4 circles out of your choice of lunch meat. (A small glass works well).
Cut 4 stars out of your choice of cheese.
Top each cracker with l x lunch meat and 1 x cheese star and ship off to the lunch box.

Pizza Scrolls

  • ½ Small red pepper (capsicum), finely chopped
  • 100g ham or salami, finely chopped
  • ½ Cup grated cheese
  • ¼ Cup pizza sauce
  • 2 Sheets of ready rolled puff pastry

Preheat the oven to 200˚C.
Combine the chopped capsicum, ham/salami & cheese in a bowl.
Spread the pizza sauce onto each sheet of puff pastry, leaving a 2cm border along one side, and sprinkle the capsicum mixture over the top.
Roll up the pastry to enclose the filling (like a Swiss roll), leaving the plain edge until last.
Brush the edge lightly with water and fold to seal.
Cut each roll into 1cm rounds and place on lined oven trays.
Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
