Intercare Day Hospitals - The future of modern day surgery

The costs of healthcare services and medical aid premiums continue to increase. Intercare recognized that there is a growing need for alternative, cost-effective care outside the acute and high care environment to assure appropriate care at the appropriate level. With this in mind, we have opened our first day hospital in Hazeldean, Pretoria in 2012. Since then, another two were opened (Irene and Sandton) with the fourth to follow in Century City, Cape Town, in July this year.

Day Hospitals carry out surgical procedures that do not require an overnight hospital stay. Patients are admitted into hospital on the day of surgery for a planned, non-emergency surgical procedure and are discharged within hours of that surgery. Co-payment is less (for some medical funds) if procedures are done at day hospitals rather than at acute hospital.

In 2014 the 3 Intercare day hospitals performed 6 234 theatre cases. These cases were performed by more than 200 surgeons with up to a 30% saving on hospital cost for patients.
